Understanding the Difference between Spirituality and Religion

Is there a difference between the two? Can you be both spiritual and religious? What does it mean to be spiritual?  ​I have explored these questions and has arrived at this conclusion. 

Spirituality is a topic that is frequently discussed and often misinterpreted.

Many individuals confuse spirituality and religion, and as a result, they bring their religious ideas and prejudices into debates about spirituality. Although spiritualism is emphasised in many religions, you can be "spiritual" without being religious or an organised religious member.

​There are several clear distinctions between religion and spirituality. ​


Religion versus Spirituality

• Religion: Is a collection of organised ideas and behaviours that a community or group of people usually shares. 
• Spirituality: This more personal discipline involves feeling at ease and having a sense of purpose. It also refers to the process of forming views about the meaning of life and one's connection to others in the absence of any predetermined spiritual principles.

You can identify as religious or spiritual in any combination, but being religious does not inherently make you spiritual, and vice versa. 

Why engage in Spiritual Practices?
Life is full of ups and downs, happy and not-so-happy situations. Spirituality is seen by many individuals as a beautiful way to find comfort and tranquilly in their lives. It is frequently used with other stress-relieving and emotional-release techniques, such as yoga. 

Spirituality is a means of seeing things from a different perspective. 

Spirituality recognises that your life role is more important than your daily life, and it can help you grasp life's higher purpose and liberate you from relying on material things. Spirituality can also help people cope with change and uncertainty.
