Jade's inspiration - The Lunar New Year
Lunar New Year (often called the Chinese New Year) is a special celebration for East and Southeast Asian communities. Unlike New Zealand Aotearoa New Year, it lasts several days. Lunar New Year has different names in different cultures but is rooted in the lunar calendar. In Mandarin, it's called the Spring Festival or Chūnjié, while Koreans celebrate Seollal and the Vietnamese refer to it as Tết.
Regardless of the name, Lunar New Year represents unity and reverence.
The celebration has a long history of feasting and honouring deities, heavenly beings, and ancestors. It begins with the first new moon after January ends and lasts fifteen days until the full moon arrives. Each year in the lunar calendar is associated with the unique qualities of one of the twelve zodiac animals.
Before the festivities, families clean their homes thoroughly to remove negative energy from the previous year and invite good fortune and blessings. Customs and rituals play an essential role in Lunar New Year celebrations.
