The World of the Fae Folk
As a child, I was captivated by fairies. I loved reading stories about magical creatures and proudly moved through the ranks of Brownies and Girl Guides, first as a Sprite, then as an Elf.
Over time, I've followed the thread of curiosity and done my research into the world of the Fae Folk, as many adults believe. Here's some of what I've discovered.
When most people think of fairies, they picture enchanted forests, toadstools, and sparkling wings; however, the world of the Fae is far more complex and deeply rooted in centuries of folklore and cultural tradition.
The Fae Folk, also called the Fair Folk or Good Folk, are said to dwell not only in woodland realms but also in backyards, city parks, and wild natural spaces. They are believed to originate from the Otherworld, a realm inhabited by magical beings and teeming with spiritual energy.
There are many different kinds of Fae. Some are playful and light, while others are more mysterious or even trickster-like in nature. The term "fairy" is broad and can encompass a variety of entities, including pixies, elves, brownies, goblins, imps, kelpies, and more. The names and roles of these beings vary across cultures, and it's challenging to define them precisely—what they share is their origin in the unseen world and their connection to nature.
Pixies are often thought of as garden dwellers; elves are more common in stories from colder northern countries like Iceland; brownies are house spirits who help with domestic life; kelpies are shape-shifting water beings found in Scottish folklore. These are just a few examples of the many beings considered part of the Fae realm.
I also found that different regions around the world have their own indigenous Fae Folk, often tied to the land and cultural lineage. In North America, some Fae are associated with Indigenous traditions, such as those of the Cherokee Nation. In Europe, Fae folklore varies between Scottish, Irish, Germanic, and Scandinavian stories, which were carried with people as they migrated.
There is no single way to describe what the Fae look like or how they behave. Their forms, temperaments, and even their moral codes can differ significantly depending on the culture, the land, and the storyteller.
This is just a glimpse into what I've discovered through reading, listening, and learning. Some people study fairy lore in much greater depth but for me, the magic lies in keeping an open heart and letting curiosity lead the way. Now I have little granddaughters - it is a magical world to explore.
And who knows? Maybe there are real Fae folk ... in your backyard, too.
